Common FAQs 👩🏻

Do you ship internationally?

We ship internationally using the USPS First Class Package International service. However, returning the sample must be organised by the customer, as we do not provide returns shipping for our international customers. Typically international returns will cost 20 - 30 USD depending on your country.

When should I test my vaginal microbiome?

We recommend swabbing when you’re experiencing your primary concern (e.g. when you’re currently experiencing an unusual itch, discharge, inflammation or smell) and to never deviate from any prescribed medical treatments you may be taking. But there are a couple of things you may want to consider to ensure a representative vaginal microbiome sample.

Avoid sampling if you’re on your period (wait 1 day)

The vaginal microbiome can change dramatically during periods. The change is only transient and may not be representative of your “base” vaginal microbiome. If you’re spotting, don’t worry, it is fine to test.

Avoid sampling while using vaginally administered probiotics (wait 14 days)

Many probiotics are just dead bacteria, but dead bacteria still have DNA! When testing your vaginal microbiome we really want to know that we are sampling living bacteria rather than dead probiotic DNA. Because of this we recommend waiting 14 days after a course of vaginally administered probiotics. This way we can tell if those probiotics are working or not!

Note: Oral probiotics are fine, you can test while using them.

Avoid sampling if you have recently used vaginally administered creams or douches (wait 1 - 2 days)

Never deviate from your medical treatment plan! When you’re taking vaginally administered creams or douches it is best to wait 1 to 2 days after your last treatment in case they transiently affect the microbiome. If you’re on long term treatments, swab at the longest time gap between your last treatment (this is usually just before you take your treatment).

Avoid sampling if you have recently had penetrative sex (wait 1 - 2 days)

Barrier lubricants can transiently affect the vaginal microbiome and semen (which has its own microbiome!) can linger long after sex. If you’re able to, it is best to wait 1 - 2 days after penetrative sex to ensure your microbiome is back to its regular state.

What to do if you’re on medical treatments such as antibiotics?

Never deviate from your medical treatment plan! When you test depends on what you’re wanting to achieve. If you want to assess how the treatment has impacted your microbiome, then wait and test 7 days after completing your treatment. If you’re not sure what the issue is, then test when you’re experiencing your primary concern even if you’re in the middle of your treatment.

Should I stop my oral probiotics and any other supplements before taking the test?

The best time to test is when you're experiencing your main vaginal concern. There will be no issue testing while taking oral probiotics, or supplements. However, if you are taking vaginally administered probiotics you should not test within 7 days of your last application. If you did want a snapshot outside the influence of these, we would recommend waiting 14 daysafter your last use. As always, it's best to consult your physician before making any changes to any medically recommended treatment plan that you might be on.

What happens after I get my results?

We will notify you via email to book a one on one session with one of our excellent vulvovaginal experts. You'll have the opportunity to walk through your test results, and ask any questions you may have.

How long does it take to receive results?

Upon receipt of your sample at our labs, you can expect your results back within 5 to 10 working days.

Do you test for Ureaplasma / Mycoplasma?

As our test uses a technique called next generation sequencing, we're able to pick up your full vaginal microbiome profile. This means, if there is Ureaplasma or Mycoplasma in your sample, this will be picked up along with it's relative abundance.

However, it is super important to note that our test is not a diagnostic test and you'll need to speak with your physician if you have concerns about any STIs.

What makes the Juno Bio test different?

Unlike other tests, at Juno Bio, we provide a wellness service using a process called next generation sequencing (NGS). This allows us to pick up on every bacteria and microbe that is present at detectable levels, and report it back with its relative abundance (unlike PCR tests which often only provide binary results). Having your full vaginal microbiome reported back to you provides a much deeper insight into your vaginal health.

What does the Juno Bio test look for?

At Juno Bio, we use a process called next generation sequencing (NGS). This allows us to pick up on every bacteria and fungus that is present at detectable levels, and to report back your full vaginal microbiome profile (that is over 10,000 different species!).

About the Vaginal Microbiome 🔬

What other conditions is the vaginal microbiome important in?

There are over 30 conditions in which the vaginal microbiome has been implicated throughout a women’s life and sexual and reproductive journeys. Watch this space as we add more info!

Does my vaginal microbiome affect my recurrent bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is a primary condition of the vaginal microbiome.
Having a disrupted vaginal microbiome is associated with infection and recurrence.

Does my vaginal microbiome affect my recurrent UTI?

The scientific evidence suggests that your vaginal microbiome acts as a reservoir (source) for UTI causing bacteria. The presence of these bacteria are highly correlated with recurrent UTI.

Does my vaginal microbiome affect my recurrent yeast infection?

Recurrent yeast infections are a primary condition of the vaginal microbiome. That means what’s in your vaginal microbiome can help fight against or allow for yeast infections.

Does my vaginal microbiome affect STI acquisition?

Studies are showing that having a disrupted vaginal microbiome is correlated with an increased chance of acquiring an STI. The latest research provides mechanistic answers for how HPV, HIV and BV enhance each other’s ability to take hold.

Does my vaginal microbiome affect preterm birth?

There is a very strong body of research that implicates the vaginal microbiome in preterm birth. Most of this research came from The Human Microbiome Project and shows that vaginal microbiomes can be used as an earlier and improved predictor of whether or not a pregnancy will result in preterm birth. It’s important to note that there is no FDA approved diagnostic based on the vaginal microbiome for this and though very promising, is still at the research phase.

Does my vaginal microbiome affect my fertility?

Until very recently, clinicians thought that the uterus was sterile but it turns out: not so much, there are microbes there too! The microbiome of the upper reproductive tract is implicated in fertility and the vaginal microbiome has been shown to be correlated with IVF success rates.

What does a healthy vaginal microbiome look like?

The conventional wisdom to date was that a vaginal microbiome dominant in Lactobacilli was a ‘healthy vaginal microbiome’. However, what scientific discoveries have shown recently is that that might not be altogether true for all women and that when it is true, the type of Lactobacilli is important. Moreover, the presence or absence of small numbers of keystone species, and their active/inactive state are also important determinants of a ‘healthy vaginal microbiome’. In short, it’s complicated. But at Juno, it’s our mission to unravel this for you and all women. It’s high time we had real answers in women’s health research.

What is my vaginal microbiome?

The vaginal microbiome is an ecosystem of bacteria and fungus which colonise the vagina, and play a crucial role in your overall health. A healthy vaginal microbiome can perform a  number of functions, from combatting infections to protecting a pregnancy.

About the test 🧪

What is meant by relative abundance?

Relative abundance refers to how prevalent or scarce a specific microbe is, relative to the other microbes in the area. On your report, the relative abundance of a microbe will be given as a percentage.

What do you mean by 'next generation sequencing'?

Next Generation Sequencing is a new and exciting tool used to analyse the DNA and RNA of microbes. At Juno Bio, we are proud to say we are the first vaginal microbiome company utilizing this technique to decode women's health and wellness. Unlike most standard PCR tests, our next generation sequencing test does not predetermine or assume what we're looking for. It allows us to capture everything along with its relative abundance.

Do you test for STIs?

Juno Bio is not a diagnostic. If you are concerned about STIs, you should talk with your physician who can order and help you with a specific STI diagnostic test.

Do you pick up on yeast and fungus?

Yes! We do. Our tests pick up on both bacterial and fungal microbes.

What does the Juno Bio test look for?

At Juno Bio, we use a process called next generation sequencing (NGS). This allows us to pick up on every bacteria and fungus that is present at detectable levels, and to report back your full vaginal microbiome profile (that is over 10,000 different species!).

How accurate are the test results?

Our wellness test resolves bacteria and fungus down to 0.1%. We are able to identify over 10,000 bacteria and fungus.

How it works 💭

There are no suitable time slots for my coaching session, what do I do?

We are working hard to make more times available.

How do I sign up to a coaching session?

When you receive your test results, there will be a link to our online booking system, meaning you can book yourself in for a coaching session right away.

What if I can't post my sample directly after I collect it?

No worries! While we do recommend posting your sample as soon as you collect it, there is some flexibility. The sample remains viable for at least 30 days after it has been collected, so delaying your postage by a day or two should not, in most cases, affect your results.

Will exposure to heat or cold affect the validity of my sample?

Normal temperature fluctuations due to changing weather should not affect the validity of your sample or your test results.

How long will my sample remain viable for?

Your sample will remain viable for at least 30 days, at an ambient temperature. This means there is no need to worry about the viability of your sample during transit, as it will remain unaffected during normal temperature fluctuations. This 30 day period is more than enough time for us to receive and start processing your sample.

I had an issue with my sample collection

If you face any issues with your sample collection, get in touch with our friendly customer service team, and they will be more than happy to help.

I did the pH test before taking a swab, will this affect the results?

As per the instructions, we ask that the pH test be used after the swab. Doing this in the reverse order is not ideal, and may affect the results. If this happens, get in touch with our customer service team, and we'll make a note to keep an eye on your results.

There was blood on my swab, is this okay?

Some blood on the swab is no cause for concern, however it is important to make sure you take the test when you are no longer menstruating, as this will invalidate your test results. Blood may appear outside of your menstrual period, and swabbing when this is the case is not a problem.

I swabbed the wrong area, what do I do?!

Swabbing in the wrong area contaminates the swab and will lead to inaccurate test results. If this ever happens, get in touch with our customer service team right away.

Who is it for? 🙋🏻

Can I gift a wellness test to somebody else?

This is definitely something you can do. You can either have the wellness test kit sent directly to the address of your choice, or be delivered to yourself. There is an activation code within the kit, so anyone can create an account and use the kit once it has been purchased.

Can I use the Juno test if I'm pregnant?

Yes! You can take the test at any time outside your menstrual period, including when you are pregnant.

Can I use the test as a trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming person?

Absolutely! Our wellness test is suitable for anyone with a vagina.

Who can take the wellness test?

Our vaginal microbiome test is for all women and people with vaginas over the age of 18 who want to learn more about their microbes. Juno Bio tests are currently exclusively intended to be used for wellness purposes. The tests we offer are not intended to diagnose or treat disease, or to substitute for a physician's consultation.

When can I take the Juno Test? 🗓️

Can I take the test if I'm on birth control?

Yes! Our test can be taken at any time, so long as it is outside your menstrual period. The best time to collect your sample is when you are experiencing symptoms that are your main concern.

Does it matter where I am in my menstrual cycle?

Yes. Our wellness test should not be used during the menstrual period, as this will invalidate the test results. Your vaginal microbiome changes with your cycle, and so you will see fluctuations in your symptoms. The best time to take the test is when you are experiencing symptoms that are your main concern. However, if you would like a snapshot of your vaginal microbiome profile at a certain stage in your cycle, you can choose to collect your sample then.

How long do I need to be off antibiotics and boric acid before swabbing for this test?

The most important time to test is when you feel you're experiencing symptoms that are your main concern. If you'd prefer to have a snapshot outside the influence of antibiotics and boric acid, we would recommending waiting seven days after completing your course to collect your sample.

If you did want a snapshot outside the influence of these, we would recommend waiting 14 days after your last use. As always, it's best to consult your physician before making any changes to any medically recommended treatment plan that you might be on.

Is there a certain diet I need to follow before taking the test?

There is no dietary prep required before taking the test. The best time to collect your sample is when you are experiencing symptoms that are your main concern.

HSA/FSA 💳

What is an FSA or HSA and what are the benefits?

An FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and an HSA (Health Savings Account) are tax-advantaged accounts for medical expenses but differ in key aspects. FSAs, employer-sponsored, allow employees to use pre-tax dollars for medical expenses such as prescriptions and copays, but typically feature a "use-it-or-lose-it" policy where funds must be used within the plan year. HSAs are available to those with a high-deductible health plan and offer more flexibility, allowing funds to roll over annually. For more information, see Flex’s Comprehensive Guide to HSA/FSAs.‍‍

How can I spend my FSA or HSA funds at Juno Bio?

From your cart, press the "Pay with HSA/FSA" button to proceed with HSA/FSA checkout. Input your card details and checkout as usual.

I don’t have an HSA or FSA card. Can I still use my HSA/FSA funds?

Yes, you can still be reimbursed for the expense.

  • From your cart, press the "Pay with HSA/FSA" button. Instead of entering your HSA or FSA card, input your regular credit card.
  • Flex will email you an itemized receipt following your purchase. Submit the itemized receipt to your HSA or FSA provider for reimbursement.

Why was my HSA or FSA card rejected?

Like any credit or debit card, HSA/FSAs can be declined if any of the data from the card is incorrect (number, expiration date, zip code etc). Flex will alert you in checkout if any of these fields is missing or incorrect so you can update them.

The most common reason for rejection of the card is insufficient funds. Reach out to your HSA or FSA provider to verify the amount of money in your account before attempting to complete your purchase again.

Who is Flex and what is their relationship with Juno Bio?

Flex has partnered with Juno Bio to enable consumers to use their HSA/FSA funds. You can think of a Flex as an alternative to payment method, similar to Affirm, Klarna etc.

I still have more questions on HSA/FSA. Who should I reach out to?

You can reach out to us about HSA/FSA questions at hello@juno.bio.‍
